Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will kick off its fall season this weekend at the St. Mary's Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The tournament will be the first of five for Wake Forest this fall.
The Demon Deacons, under the guidance of first year head coach Chad Skorupka, enter the fall season coming off a 13-10 spring season and a 5-5 mark in the ACC. Wake Forest, having lost three seniors last season, returns a wealth of talent, including NCAA individual qualifier Ashlee Davis. Davis, who played the majority of the 2004 season at the No. 2 doubles position, was ranked as the No. 44 singles player by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason poll.
Redshirt-sophomore Alex Hirsch also returns for the Deacs this season. Hirsch compiled a 13-7 overall record last spring. She also participated in the NCAA doubles championship where she advanced to the second round with former Demon Deacon Karin Coetzee. Ranked by the ITA as the No. 92 singles player in the preseason poll, Hirsch was also pegged as the No. 42 doubles player, alongside new partner, Davis.
