Winston-Salem, NC - Senior Christy Williams earned 20 kills on 36 attempts for a team-high .472 hitting percentage to lead the Wake Forest volleyball team past South Dakota State, 3-2 (30-26, 23-30, 28-30, 30-27, 15-10) in the second match of the Gold and Black Challenge, Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Demon Deacons to 6-2 overall and increases their winning streak to five.
Once again proving strong in front of the net, Wake Forest closed the day with 20 block assists. Freshman Ashley Homitz and sophomore Jackie Lucas both earned five, while Erin Borhart and Lauren Peterson both had three.
The first game was close between the two teams and it set the tone for the remainder of the match. Tying the score six times, no team held a larger lead than four points. Wake finally took control at the 26 all mark when Williams served four straight to close the match, 30-26.
Wake jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the second game, but the Jackrabbits jumped right into the game and knotted the score. After trading the lead back and forth, South Dakota State took control at 9-9 with a four point run. From there, the Deacs were unable to regain the lead and the Jackrabbits took the second game, 30-23.
In the third Wake Forest held the lead through the entire game until South Dakota snuck up and tied it at 28 all. Taking the last three points, two of which were errors on the Deacs, the Jackrabbits took the third game, 30-28.
Both teams came out from the break fighting. Tying the score 14 times, the two teams switched the lead nine times. It wasn't until the 25-24 mark that Williams came to the line and served for four straight points. A pair of kills by Peterson helped seal the game and put the match into a tiebreaker.
The tiebreaking match was quick with the Deacs jumping out to an early lead and holding onto it. Only playing to 15, Wake Forest closed the match with a pair kills by freshman Natalie Mullikin.
Borhart had a good outing earning a double-double with 54 assists and 17 digs. In addition, junior Natasha Schaefer added 17 digs, while Peterson had 13 kills and three block assists.
Wake Forest will close the tournament tonight against Morehead State at 7 p.m.
