Deacons Finish 12th In First Tournament Of The Season

9/28/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf

Sept. 28, 2005

SUNRIVER, Ore. - Wake Forest could not gain any ground in the final round of the Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview today and finished 12th at the par 72 Crosswater Golf Club. Fifteen of the nation's top men's college golf teams participated in the annual event.

Deacon sophomore Webb Simpson was a bright spot for Wake Forest. He fired a 70-67-72--209 (-7) to finish fourth, his sixth career top-10 finish. Simpson had a chance to finish even higher after making six birdies today, but he countered that with four bogies and a double-bogey.

Georgia ran away with the team title with a cumulative 19-under 845. The Bulldogs finished 15 strokes ahead of second-place Georgia Tech (860), Oklahoma State (862), UNLV (867) and Duke (869).

Simpson finished four strokes behind co-medalists Brian Harman of Georgia and Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State. Both finished 11-under par for the tournament. Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro finished just ahead of Simpson after an 8-under 208.

As a team, Wake Forest shot a 6-over 294 today, slipping from 11th to 12th place. While Simpson enjoyed three rounds of par or better, no other Deacon managed par throughout the tournament. Seniors Kyle Reifers and Doug Manchester each finished the 54-hole event tied for 46th place with a 9-over par 225. Junior Sean Moore struggled to a 79 today and finished tied for 51st with an 11-over 227. Sophomore Chris McCartin tied for 69th with an 18-over 234.

Up next for Wake Forest is the Mattaponi Springs Shootout Monday and Tuesday in Richmond, VA.
