Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore Jackie Lucas had seven block assists and eight kills en route to a team-high 11.5 points, but the Wake Forest volleyball team was unable to pull it out and fell to Ohio, 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-19) in the final match of the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Classic.
The Demon Deacons, who put up an impressive 16 block assists earlier in the day against Tennessee State, continued to shine at the net against Ohio with 18. On the weekend, Wake Forest closed the tournament with 26 team blocks and 41 block assists.
Defensively, junior Natasha Schaefer led the team for the second consecutive match, dishing out 11 digs. Erin Borhart followed closely with eight, while AJ Nicholas and Klarysa Henry both added six digs of their own.
In the first game, Wake Forest fell behind early with Ohio jumping out to a 11-3 lead. Despite three kills and two digs by Borhart, the Deacs couldn't catch up.
The Deacs battled in the second game, tying the score 14 times and exchanging the lead eight times. At the net, Lucas earned four block assists, while freshman Natalie Mullikin and junior Lauren Peterson both added two, along with four kills. Staying within one point the entire game, the Bobcats took the lead at 27-26 and held it from there.
Lucas came out again in the third game, slamming down two kills and three block assists, but the early 12-5 lead that Ohio opened the game with was too much for Wake Forest to overcome.
The Demon Deacons, who defeated Tennessee State earlier in the day, fall to 1-2 on the season. They will next play Arkansas-Little Rock at the Texas-Arlington Tournament, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
