ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Wake Forest women's basketball chipped away at its 12th first half deficit of the season, but couldn't overcome a last minute offensive surge, as Georgia Tech slipped past Wake Forest, 66-61, Sunday afternoon. In the loss, seniors Cotelia Bond-Young and Liz Strunk both scored 17 points, while freshman Deirdre Naughton added 16.

The Demon Deacons drop to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, while the win for Georgia Tech snaps a five-game losing streak and gives the Yellow Jackets a 12-6 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the conference.

Naughton scored in double figures for the 16th time this season, while Bond-Young and Strunk led the Deacs in scoring for the ninth and sixth times, respectively. Off the boards, freshman Corinne Groves pulled down the team-high seven rebounds, while adding six points.

After shooting just under 30 percent in the first half, the Deacs used the first 10 minutes of the second stanza to chip away at the Yellow Jacket lead. Catching up with just under eight minutes remaining, the two teams teetered back and forth, each looking to take control. It wasn't until there was just under five minutes remaining that Tech went on a 9-2 run that gave the Jackets the advantage they were looking for.

It was a rough start in the first half with Georgia Tech opening up the game with a 12-2 run. Extending its lead to as much as 14, the Deacs waited until the last four minutes of the stanza to turn it on. Bond-Young hit a pair of three's and started the Deacs on a 12-4 run, taking Wake Forest into the break trailing by six.

On the day, the Deacs were out-rebounded by the Jackets, 50 to 33, but came back offensively in the second half to finish the night with 35 percent shooting. Georgia Tech, who shot 38.9 percent in the first half, finished the day at 34.8 percent from the field.

The Demon Deacons will take a short break and return to action of Friday, Jan. 27 for the second of their three televised appearances with a game against North Carolina. Carried by Fox Sports South, the game time in Joel Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.
