Winston-Salem, NC - The 15th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis begins its spring season this weekend with three matches in two days at the Indoor Tennis Center. The Deacons face East Tennessee State on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., followed by East Carolina at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday at noon, Wake Forest hosts 51st-ranked Northwestern.
This is the second straight year the Deacons have hosted the Buccaneers in their season opener. Last season, Wake Forest prevailed 7-0 and the Deacons lead the all-time series, 15-2.
The East Carolina match marks the return of former Deacon assistant coach Shawn Heinchon, who worked under Jeff Zinn from 1998-2003. The Deacons have won all 10 meetings in the series, but the teams haven't met on the court since 2000.
Northwestern will be the highest ranked opponent Wake Forest will face this weekend. The Wildcats are ranked 51st in the nation. Sunday's match will be the first time the two schools have met in tennis since 1975.
The Deacons enter the 2006 spring season ranked 15th, their highest ranking in program history. Wake Forest returns six of its top seven players from last season, including three players currently ranked in the top 100 in singles. Junior Todd Paul leads the way at No. 11, junior Andrew Hamar is No. 35 and senior Brett Ross rounds out the list at No. 77.
