WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Cotelia Bond-Young's 3-point play with 3.7 seconds remaining helped lift Wake Forest to a 65-64 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over North Carolina State on Saturday.
With the Demon Deacons (8-5, 1-1 ACC) trailing 64-62, Bond-Young was fouled by N.C. State defender Ashley Key as she nailed a 15-foot jumper to tie the score.
Bond-Young, who finished with 11 points, then sank the free throw as Wake Forest snapped a nine-game losing streak at Lawrence Joel Coliseum against the Wolfpack (10-4, 1-1).
Liz Strunk scored 21 points to lead the Demon Deacons, who had lost to No. 2 Duke 100-54 in their ACC opener on Jan. 2, with freshman Deirdre Naughton adding 15.
Tiffany Stansbury led N.C. State with 17 points and 14 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Key finished with 16 points.
Wake Forest overcame a 15-point deficit midway through the first half to pull within 36-33 at halftime. The Demon Deacons tied the score at 43-all on Naughton's 3-pointer with 16:11 left, then Bond-Young hit a 3-pointer at 15:38 to give Wake Forest its first lead.
The Demon Deacons led by as many as six points in the second half, and were up 58-53 with 5:20 left when the Wolfpack rallied. N.C. State hit three straight 3-pointers to go up 62-60, with a pair of Stansbury free throws giving the Wolfpack a 64-60 lead with 1:13 remaining.
Corinne Groves hit a pair of free throws to pull Wake Forest within 64-62, then Key missed the front end of a one-and-one with 17.4 seconds remaining to set up Bond-Young's game-winning shots.
