Mandy Goins Finishes in Second Place at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior Mandy Goins followed her stellar performance on Saturday with an even better day on Sunday, shooting a two-under-par 70 to finish in second place at the Landfall Tradition held at the Country Club of Landfall's Jack Nicklaus Course (Par 72, 6072 yards).
Goins led an overall solid effort by the No. 12-ranked Demon Deacons, as Wake Forest shot a four-over-par 292 to move ahead two spots and finish in fourth place out of 12 teams. The Deacs bested their second-round score by 19 shots and tallied the tournament's best third-round score. The 292 is tied for Wake's third-best round this fall.
Goins finished the tournament at three over par with a three-day total of 77-72-70--219. Her third-round 70 tied Carmen Perez-Narbon of UNC Wilmington for the day's best score. Goins finished four strokes back of individual medalist Sara Brown of Michigan State.
Goins' second-place finish was her fourth top-five finish of her career and first in 2006-07. It was her best finish since she tied for second at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic March 24-26, 2006.
Senior Maggie Simons posted her best round of the season on Sunday with an even-par 72. Simons ended the tournament at 16 over par with a three-day score of 81-79-72--232. Her third-round effort allowed Simons to move up 12 spots and finish in a tie for 22nd, her highest finish so far this fall.
Junior Laura Crawford also turned in a season-best round on Sunday, shooting a two-over-par 74. Crawford moved up seven spots on the final day, ending the tournament in a tie for 28th. Crawford finished with a three-day total of 79-82-74--235, putting her at 19 over par.
Junior Jordan Craig tied her career high with a four-over-par round of 76. Craig ended the event at 22 over and in 34th place. She recorded a three-day score of 80-82-76--238.
Sophomore Nannette Hill shot an eight-over-par 80 on Sunday to drop into a tie for 25th. Hill finished the weekend at 18 over par with a total score of 74-80-80--234.
No. 23-ranked Michigan State surged ahead on the final day to move into a tie with No. 9 Virginia for the team title. The Spartans shot a seven-over-par 295 on Sunday to make up 11 strokes on the Cavaliers.
No. 18 New Mexico took third behind MSU and Virginia. After Wake Forest jumped Michigan and Ohio State for fourth place, the two Big Ten squads placed fifth and sixth respectively.
Michigan State's Brown held on to her individual lead from Saturday to earn individual medalist honors. Brown was at one under par for the tournament, finishing with a three-day total of 74-69-72--215.
The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they wrap up their fall schedule in Orlando, Fla., at the National Collegiate Match Play Championship Nov. 3-5. Wake is seeded fifth in the 16-team field and will take on 12th-seeded LSU in the first round.
