Wake Forest's women's cross country team jumped up in the national poll, from 28to to 14th this week, after a strong showing last Friday evening at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
Defending NCAA champion Stanford is a unanimous pick for No. 1 in this week's Division I women's cross country poll, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday. The Cardinal received 13 first-place votes from a committee of Division I coaches. Stanford maintained the top ranking it received in the USTFCCCA's Sept. 12 preseason poll.
Colorado, the runner-up to Stanford at last fall's NCAA Cross Country Championships, is ranked second. Rounding out the women's Division I top 10 behind Stanford and Colorado are Michigan, Oklahoma State, Duke, BYU, Illinois, Arkansas, Wisconsin and Washington. Washington moved up to 10th from its preseason ranking of 21st.
Wake Forest finished second last Friday at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, beating several ranked teams in the process. Senior Michelle Sikes, who finished second individually, was named the ACC Performer of the Week.
The voting panel consists of the nine elected regional representatives and four at large members of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Demon Deacon men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action Oct. 14 in Terre Haute (Ind.) at the Pre-NCAA Invitational.
