Wake Forest vs. Western Carolina
The Demon Deacons return from Lexington, Ky. to play Western Carolina in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. Wake Forest is coming off a 1-1 showing at the Women's Sports Foundation Tournament last weekend in Lexington. The Deacs fell, 75-53, to Indiana on Friday but rebounded for a 45-37 win over Washington State on Sunday. Western Carolina is coming off a 71-56 season-opening loss to Auburn on Friday in Cullowhee. Tuesday's contest will be the 20th all-time meeting between the two schools.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons went 1-1 at the season-opening Women's Sports Foundation Tournament in Lexington, Ky. last weekend. Wake was plagued by shooting woes and turnovers in a 75-53 loss to Indiana in the opening round. The Deacs shot just 29.0 percent (18-of-62) and committed 25 turnovers. Wake jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the early going, but a 22-9 Indiana run allowed the Hoosiers to take control of the ballgame. Sophomore Corinne Groves led Wake with 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Yolanda Lavender and junior Melissa Washington scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively
The Deacons recovered from the loss to post a 45-37 win over Washington State in the consolation game on Sunday. Wake Forest used its size advantage to win the battle in the paint, out-rebounding WSU 52-39 and out-scoring the Cougars 20-8 in the paint. The Deacs pulled away from a 21-20 halftime lead with a 13-7 run over the first 10 minutes of the second period. Sophomore Alex Tchangoue led the Deacs with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Courteney Morris turned in a team-best six steals.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will play Triad-rival High Point Friday at 5 p.m. at Joel Coliseum. The game is the front end of a doubleheader with the Demon Deacon men's squad. The men will host Elon at 8 p.m. on Friday. The Wake Forest women are at home for six straight and nine of 10 contests during the months of November and December. Wake's only road game until the New Year is a Dec. 14 matchup at Wright State.
