Wake Forest will host Elon and former Demon Deacon assistant coach Ernie Nestor, beginning a three-game homestand, Friday night at Lawrence Joel Coliseum (8 p.m./no TV).
Friday's game is the nightcap of a women's/men's double-header at The Joel. The Wake Forest women's team hosts High Point Friday at 5 p.m.
Wake Forest, 2-0 following a thrilling 86-83 overtime win at Bucknell Tuesday night, kept its poise in a hostile environment against the Bison. The Deacons, who struggled at the free throw line most of the game, made their free throws down the stretch and freshman Ishmael Smith sank two three-point field goals in the overtime period to lift Wake Forest.
The Deacons have been led by senior center Kyle Visser (24.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg), who scored a career-high 26 points Tuesday and is shooting 86.4 percent. Sophomore Harvey Hale (19.5 ppg), who scored 17 of his career-high 20 points at Bucknell, leads the team with six three-point field goals. Smith is averaging 13.0 points and 9.0 assists per game.
Elon, 1-1, bounced back from an 83-49 season-opening loss at Georgia Tech to beat visiting Montreat, 85-72, Tuesday night. Sophomore Brett James (20 points) and senior LeVonn Jordan (18 points) combined for 38 points in the win over Montreat.
Phoenix head coach Ernie Nestor returns to Winston-Salem, where he served as an assistant coach to Carl Tacy from 1980-85 and Dave Odom from 1994 to 2001. Wake Forest leads the all-time series, 34-6. The Deacons have won the last 22 meetings, including a 78-59 win at the Greensboro Coliseum last year.
