WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest used a balance attack, putting three players in double figures, as the Demon Deacons downed Triad-rival High Point 62-48 Friday evening at Joel Coliseum.

The win evens the Deacons' record at 2-2, while the Panthers fall to 0-2 on the season.

Sophomore Yolanda Lavender led Wake Forest in scoring for the second straight game. Lavender, who tallied a career-high 24 markers against Western Carolina on Tuesday, scored a game-high 14 on Friday.

Sophomore Alex Tchangoue finished the night with a career-high 13 points. Tchangoue posted her second double-double of the season by pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Freshman Mekia Valentine, who made her first collegiate start, joined Lavender and Tchangoue in double-figures, scoring 10 points.

Sophomore Corinne Groves just missed her third double-double of the season with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman Tiffany Roulhac came off the bench to tally a game-high six assists.

Juniors Christen Brown and Melissa Washington each pulled down six rebounds. Four of Washington's boards came on the offensive end.

The Demon Deacons used a late run in the first half to pull away from the Panthers. After High Point tied the game at 19-19 on a three-pointer from Ayonna Thompson, Wake Forest followed with nine unanswered points. The Deacs finished the half on an 11-2 run to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room.

The two teams played the early part of the second half evenly before Wake Forest started to add to its lead late in the game. The Deacs never let the Panthers get closer than seven in the second period.

With the Demon Deacons holding a 48-41 lead, Lavender drilled a three-pointer to put Wake up by 10 points. From that point on, the home squad's lead never fell below double digits, as Wake Forest held High Point without a field goal for the final 3:26 of the game.

Candyce Sellars and Katie Ralls finished in double figures for the Panthers, scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.

Wake Forest won despite losing the turnover battle. The Deacs committed 23 turnovers to the Panthers' 21.

The Demon Deacons shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor. High Point finished the game at 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor.

"This part of our schedule is about finding a way to win games and getting better," said Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen. "Tonight we found a way to win the game. We'll watch the film tomorrow, and we'll be better after we watch the film."

Wake Forest returns to action next Wednesday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Wofford at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons will also be in action two days later, playing host to Florida A&M at 7 p.m.
