WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team showed very little hospitality today in the opening round of the Wake Forest Fall Invitational, winning six of seven singles matches against Marshall and Furman.

The two-day event concludes Saturday at Leighton Tennis Stadium with the semifinals and finals of singles play and the finals of doubles.

Wake Forest's Ashlee Davis and Alex Hirsch both advanced to the semifinals of the Singles A bracket after posting three-set victories. Davis beat Furman's Bonnie Baird, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Hirsch topped Marshall's Karotina Soor, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Davis and Hirsch are in opposite brackets, meaning they must both win semifinal matches tomorrow for a chance to meet in the finals.

Sophomore Christian Tara was the only Deacon to lose in singles Friday, falling to Marshall's Kellie Schmitt, 6-2, 6-4.

Wake Forest dominated the Singles B bracket, sending three players into tomorrow's semifinals. Sasha Kulikova rolled past Furman's Lauren Tomory, 6-1, 6-0. Ana Jerman beat Marshall's Jessica Keener, 7-5, 6-2 and Sierra Poske topped Marshall's Jeanne Schwartz, 6-2, 6-0. Kulikova and Jerman will meet in one semifinal match Saturday while Poske will play Thaddea Lock of Marshall in the other semifinal.

In the four-player Singles C bracket, junior Jenna Loeb defeated Yulia Kashelkina of Marshall, 7-5, 6-4, and will play in the finals on Saturday.

The Demon Deacons were successful, but not dominant, in the doubles competition.

Tara and Poske combined to beat Schwartz and Keener of Marshall in a 9-8 nailbiter. The Deacon duo went on to lose in the semifinal round, 8-3, to Schmitt and Keever of Marshall. Davis and Kulikova will play in Saturday's doubles championship. Davis and Kulikova combined to beat Soor and Lock of Marshall, 8-6, then topped Eckert and Osbourne of Furman, 8-2. They will play Schmitt and Keever in the championship match.

Jerman and Loeb fell in the doubles opening round to Eckert and Osbourne of Furman, 8-3. The Deacon duo also fell in the consolation semifinals, 8-4, to Soor and Lock of Marshall.
