WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Deirdre Naughton nailed a new career high 37 points and scored the most points by a Wake Forest freshman, leading the Demon Deacon women's basketball team past Savannah State, 100-51, Tuesday night in Joel Coliseum.
Naughton also makes her mark in the overall record books, as the 37 points is the third-most scored in the history of the women's basketball program. It is also the fourth consecutive game that the guard has scored more than 20 points and it is the second most scored by any ACC player this season.
Adding to the achievements of the night, the game marks the second time this year that the Demon Deacons have scored 100 points. The last time Wake Forest had two 100-point games in a season was in the 1988 when the Deacs put up 113 against Coppin State and then 109 against Tennessee State in back-to-back games.
The Deacs sailed out to a 31-point lead in the first half thanks to a 30-4 run that included a stretch of 18 unanswered points. Naughton and Cotelia Bond-Young spent most of the half mirroring each other, scoring 14 and 13, respectively. Going into the break, the Deacs had the largest halftime lead since playing Savannah State last year.
Continuing to push ahead, Naughton closed the night with 12-of-21 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 from the line to break the 13 year old record. The previous record was 35 by Tracy Conner on Jan. 21, 1993 against NC State.
Also in the effort, Bond-Young added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Alex Tchangoue led the team off the boards with nine. As a team, the Deacs outrebounded the Tigers, 59 to 25 and scored 32 points off turnovers.
Wake Forest has two remaining games in the regular season and improves to 12-13 overall and closes out the home season with a 9-5 record.
The Demon Deacons close out the regular season with a pair of road games against Florida State on Thursday, Feb. 23 and then Virginia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 26.
