
Women's Basketball Drops Final Regular Season Game, 76-42

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech pushed out to large lead in the first half and continued to extend it in the second, en route to defeating the Wake Forest women's basketball team, 76-42, in the final regular season game of the year.
Freshman Deirdre Naughton led the Deacs for the fourth time in the last six games with 10 points, while senior Cotelia Bond-Young finished the day with nine points.
On their senior night, the Hokies had four players in double figures, including senior Kerri Gardin with 11 points. Gardin also added the game-high 11 rebounds. As a team, Wake Forest struggled offensively, shooting a season-low 26.4 percent on the night. Virginia Tech closed shooting 53.3 percent and scoring 54 points in the paint.
Virginia Tech came out swinging off the opening tip with eight straight points for the early lead. Tying the score at 10 all, the Deacs momentarily got back into the game, but the Hokies were quick to surge out on a 17-2 run that left Wake Forest trailing once again. Pushing it out to as much as 22 in the first half, the Deacs went into the break behind for the 20th time this season.
The second half was much like the first, with the Hokies continuing to increase their lead. Virginia Tech jumped ahead by as much as 38 and eventually closed the day with the victory.
The Demon Deacons, who finish the regular season with an 12-15 record and a 3-11 mark in the conference now awaits their seeding for the ACC Tournament that will be held March 3-5 in Greensboro, N.C. The official seeding will be announced by the conference office on Monday, March 26.
