WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Brad Kledzik tossed 6.0 scoreless innings and the Wake Forest bullpen did the rest in a 5-0 shutout of Boston College in the series opener from Hooks Stadium Friday afternoon. With the victory, the No. 25 Demon Deacons improve to 15-5 overall and 2-2 in the ACC, while the Eagles drop to 9-7 and 0-4.
Kledzik (3-1) worked out of jams for much of the afternoon. The right-handed hurler scattered nine hits over his 6.0 innings of work. Boston College led off the second, fourth and fifth innings with hits, but Kledzik made pitch after pitch to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Kledzik again found himself in trouble in the sixth inning after Boston College recorded back-to-back singles. With no outs and runners on first and second, Kledzik struck out Dave Preziosi for the first out of the inning and then got Shawn McGill to fly out. After an infield single loaded the bases, Kledzik fanned Ryne Reynoso to get out of the inning with the shutout intact.
Kledzik struck out four and walked just one. He improved to 3-1 with the victory and lowered his season earned run average to 2.43. Kledzik has been tremendous over his first two career starts in ACC action. He has tossed 13.0 innings and allowed only two earned runs.
The Demon Deacons gave Kledzik an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Redshirt junior Brendan Enick drove in sophomore Austin Jones with a single. Jones, who was in the leadoff spot for the second straight game, opened the inning with an infield single. The Deacs plated their second run of the inning when Boston College starter Terry Doyle balked.
Wake Forest pushed the lead to 3-0 when Jones snuck an RBI single just past Eagles shortstop Joseph Ayers scoring sophomore Andy Goff. Freshman Allan Dykstra put the game out of reach with a two-run bomb deep over the right field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dykstra is second on the Deacons in home runs with five.
Senior Kyle Young worked a scoreless inning of relief and junior Josh Ellis tossed 2.0 scoreless innings. Ellis and Young each allowed a hit, but Ellis also struck out three.
Jones went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while freshman Dustin Hood, Dykstra, Enick, freshman Evan Ocheltree and Goff all added hits.
Doyle (2-2) was charged with the loss. The Eagles righty surrendered five earned runs on seven hits. Doyle fanned six and walked three.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow afternoon with the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Junior Charlie Mellies will take the hill for the Demon Deacons.
