
Deacons Scrape Past Terrapins, 5-2

Winston-Salem, NC - The 25th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team got all it could handle from 70th-ranked Maryland on Saturday afternoon, but walked away with a 5-2 victory.
The Deacons (12-5, 4-1 ACC) captured the doubles point, but the Terrapins took one of the three matches from Wake Forest. Andrew Hamar and Todd Paul picked up a win at number one, 8-3. At number three, Joe Bates and Liron Strauss clinched the doubles point for the Deacons with an 8-6 victory.
Wake Forest coasted to three easy singles matches to clinch the match. At number one, Todd Paul earned his team-best 24th singles win by defeating Andrew Orban, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Brett Ross recorded his 94th career singles win, beating Boris Fetbroyt, 6-0, 6-1. Ross' next win will put him a tie for fourth place in Wake Forest history with former teammate Mike Murray.
Freshman Cory Parr upped his singles record to 21-7 with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Maryland's Andreas Vaage-Nilsen. Sophomore Charles Sartor rallied for a three-set win at number six. He dropped his first set in a tiebreaker, but responded by winning the second set 6-0 and the super tie-breaker, 10-7.
Maryland (9-5, 1-4 ACC) won the final two afternoon matches, winning a pair of super tie-breakers. At number two, Andrew Hamar lost to 93rd-ranked Nickolai Nielsen, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). At number five, Mariusz Adamski fell to Scott Fink, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (10-4).
Wake Forest now leads the all-time series with Maryland, 28-10.
For the Deacons, it was their third straight victory and the fifth in their last six matches. Wake Forest hosts Boston College on Sunday at noon at the Upper Eight Courts.
