Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest mounted an early 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold on as 30th-ranked Georgia Tech rallied past the Deacons, 4-3, at Leighton Tennis Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Deacons, ranked 26th, swept the three doubles matches, to capture an early lead. Wake Forest was 14-0 when winning the doubles point this season. That magic formula came to an end against Georgia Tech, which won four of the six singles matches to walk away with the victory.
With the loss, the Deacons fall to 14-7 overall, 6-3 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets up their record to 9-8 overall, 3-6 in the conference.
At number one singles, junior Todd Paul broke out of a mini-slump with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Marko Rajevac to improve his season record to 25-9. At that time, the Deacons led 2-0 and were up a set at number three and four singles with the number six match yet to begin.
The Yellow Jackets sliced into Wake Forest's lead when Scott Blackmon defeated Mariusz Adamski, 6-2, 6-3, at number five singles.
The Georgia Tech rally continued at number three where David North upended Andrew Hamar, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. At number two, Wake Forest's Cory Parr pushed Georgia Tech's Jordan Delass to a third set tiebreaker, but couldn't complete the rally, losing 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (3).
Suddenly down 3-2, the Deacons needed victories from both Brett Ross and Liron Strauss, both of whom won their first set. Ross had a chance to put away Zachary Rath in a second set tiebreaker, but Rath survived to force a third set. The Georgia Tech junior broke Ross' serve at 4-4 and then served out the match to win, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Strauss was up a set and moments into the second when Ross' match was completed. Playing in his final match at Leighton Tennis Stadium, Strauss won 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
The Deacons complete their six-match, 11-day homestand with a 4-2 record. Wake Forest finishes the regular season next weekend in the Sunshine State. The Deacons play Miami on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Florida State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
