Women's Golf Finishes Seventh, Advances To NCAA Championships

Browns Summit, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team returns to the NCAA Championships after firing a final round 294, six-over par and finishing in seventh place at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional. The top eight teams out of the 21 team field advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The Demon Deacons shot a three round total of 883, 19-over par. The 54-hole event began Thursday and ended Saturday and was contested at Bryan Park Golf Club (par 72, 6,386 yards).
Tennessee took the team title after shooting an even par total of 864. LSU finished second six strokes behind. California fired a 10-over 874 and placed third with Florida State and Arizona State each four shots behind tied for fourth. Auburn finished sixth at 15-over par.
A playoff was needed to decide the eighth and final spot between Alabama and Virginia. The Tide won the sudden death play-off on the first hole with four pars compared to three pars and a bogey for the Cavaliers.
Junior Mandy Goins stood as the low finisher for the Deacons after firing a final round 73, one-over par. The all-conference performer finished in a tie for third with a career-best and three-day total of 213, three-under par.
Freshman Jean Chua after struggling the first two days fired a team best even par 72 on Saturday. She finished with a 54-hole total of 228, 12-over par.
Maggie Simons finished in a tie for 25th place after firing a three-day total of 221, five-over par. The junior closed out her final round with a four-over par 76.
Freshman Nannette Hill added a three-over par 75 for the Demon Deacons. Hill finished with a three-day total of 229, 13-over par.
Sophomore Laura Crawford closed out the scoring for the Deacons with a two-over par 74 on Saturday. Crawford finished with a 233, 17-over par total for the regional.
Tennessee's Marci Turner captured the individual title after shooting a three-under par 69. Turner had a 54-hole total of 209, seven-under par. Arizona State's Alissa Kuczka shot a second consecutive round of four-under par 68 to finish second with a five-under par, 211.
Wake Forest will next travel to the Ohio State University to compete at the NCAA Championships. The 72-hole event will be contested on the recently renovated Scarlet Course.
