PALO ALTO, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore Alex Hirsch was selected to participate in the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship and will face No. 52-ranked Whitney Deason of Stanford, Wednesday, May 24, in Palo Alto, Calif. The match will begin at 6:30 pm Pacific Time (9:30 pm Eastern). The trip to the individual tournament is Hirsch's first and with it she becomes the 17th Demon Deacon to participate in the championship.
"Alex has worked very hard on the court to be one of the top players in the ACC," Wake Forest head coach Chad Skorupka said. "She has battled back from arm surgery in her freshman year and where she is now is a great achievement for both her and Wake Forest tennis."
Hirch has been ranked in the national polls throughout the 2006 season and currently sits at No. 44. Compiling a team-best 25-10 overall record during the 2006 season, Hirsch has defeated seven ranked opponents while playing the entire year at the No. 1 spot for the Demon Deacons. In addition, her career winning percentage of .714 (50-20) currently puts her in the fifth position in the Wake Forest record books.
