INDIANAPOLIS IND. - Redshirt sophomore Alex Hirsch was selected to participate in the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship, as announced by the NCAA Thursday afternoon. Hirsch becomes the 17th Demon Deacon to participate in the individual tournament.
"Alex has worked very hard on the court to be one of the top players in the ACC," Wake Forest head coach Chad Skorupka said. "She has battled back from arm surgery during her freshman year and where she is now is a great achievement for both her and Wake Forest tennis."
Hirsch has been ranked in the national polls throughout the 2006 season and currently sits at No. 44. Compiling a 24-10 overall record during the spring, Hirsch has defeated six ranked opponents while playing the entire year at the No. 1 spot for the Demon Deacons.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). Stanford University will serve as host.
All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
As a team, the No. 21 Wake Forest women's tennis team will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. where they will face No. 36 South Carolina on Friday, May 12, in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Championship
