COMITAN, Mexico - Former Wake Forest tennis player Brett Ross won his fourth professional title, capturing the doubles championship at the 2006 Copa Ciro Farrera last weekend. Ross paired with a former rival, Darrin Cohen of Virginia, to win the $10,000 event in Comitan, Mexico.
Ross and Cohen battled through a difficult set of opponents en route to the title, defeating the tournament's one, three and four seeds. In the first round, the pair edged the fourth-seeded duo of Michael Johnson (USA) and Lazaro Navarro (Cuba), 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. Ross and Cohen upset the top-seeded team of Dane Fernandez and David To of Australia, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. The former ACC stars captured their first championship together with a straight set 7-5, 6-1 win against third-seeded Tiago Lopes (Brazil) and Rafael Arevalo (Spain).
For Ross, it continues a successful run in his young professional career. Earlier this summer, Ross and former Wake Forest teammate Derrick Spice won the doubles at the Crown North Carolina Closed Championships in Greensboro. Ross also won the singles championship there and at the CVITT Tournament at the Oakwood Country Club in Lynchburg, Va.
Ross, who hails from Roswell, Ga., helped Wake Forest appear in four straight NCAA Tournaments and completed his collegiate career in the spring with 97 singles wins, the fourth-most in program history.
