Chrisman Has Top Time In Wake Forest Relays

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Virginia Tech held off host Wake Forest, Duke and High Point to capture both the men's and women's races at the 2006 Wake Forest Relays -- the cross country season opener held on the Wake Forest campus.
The annual Wake Forest Relays follow a unique format in which two runners from each school run two different legs of the race. Their times are combined for a team score and are added to other team scores from that school to produce the final total.
Virginia Tech won the four-team men's race with a combined time of 2:15:02. Wake Forest took second (2:19:02), High Point (2:20:36) and Duke (2:24:00).
The Hokies also won the women's event with a combined time of 1:47:19. Duke finished second at 1:50:28 and High Point third at 1:53:01. Only two of Wake Forest's relay teams finished the race, giving the Deacons a technical finish of fourth place.
In the men's race, the duo of High Point's Tamas Kovacs and Jesse Cherry had the fastest relay team with a combined time of 44:19. Virginia Tech earned its race-winning points by finishing second, third and fifth. Kovacs and Cherry had the top two individual times of the day.
Wake Forest's tandem of Brad Wharton and Joel Conn finished in fourth place, 47 seconds out of first place. Wake's Chris Catton and Joel Compton took sixth place. Wharton and Conn had the fifth- and seventh-best times individually.
On the women's side, Virginia Tech's Tas Fanning and Kelly Clark finished as the top relay team, 25 seconds in front of Duke's Emily McCabe and Maddie McKeever.
The Wake Forest duo of Merry Placer and Caitlin Chrisman took third place with a time of 35:26. The Deacons also had the sixth-fastest relay team in Mary Alice Howard and Erin Franklin. Two Deacon relay teams, however, did not finish because of injuries.
A bright spot for Wake Forest was Chrisman. The sophomore had the best individual time of the day with a 16:58, six seconds in front of Virginia Tech's Fanning.
Wake Forest senior Erin Franklin had the seventh-best individual time of the day.
Wake Forest's men's and women's teams are back in action next Saturday at the Pre-ACC Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
