WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest women's tennis players Alex Hirsch, Sasha Kulikova and Christian Tara each won their respective singles brackets and did not drop a set all weekend, closing out the Deacon Classic with undefeated records.
Hirsch, the preseason No. 32 singles player, clinched the victory in flight A singles with a close 7-6, 6-4 victory over Yevgeniya Stupak of ETSU. Hirsch was also undefeated on the weekend in doubles, pairing up with sophomore Sierra Poske and winning flight A. So far this season, Poske and Hirsch have won five of their last six matches as a double tandem.
Tara advanced to the finals of the flight B doubles, where she faced her teammate Ana Jerman. Defeating Jerman, 6-4, 6-2, Tara improved her fall record to 6-2 overall. In doubles, Tara paired up with Kulikova and won the backdraw of flight B with a victory over OSU's Keesey/Finucane, 8-2.
Just a freshman, Kulikova has already made an impact this fall, compiling a perfect singles record through the first two tournaments. At the Deacon Classic, she advanced to the finals of flight C and defeated Poske, 6-4, 6-3, to improve her fall record to 7-0.
Junior Jenna Loeb advanced to the finals of the flight D singles, but fell to Yuilana Svivtun of Kansas, 6-1, 6-4.
Wake Forest will next travel to the ITA/All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. The tournament, consisting of a prequalifier, a qualifier and a main draw, will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8.
