WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Alex Hirsch and senior Christine Simpson have been selected as the captains for the Wake Forest women's tennis team's 2006-07 campaign.
"I am very excited that Christine and Alex will be serving as captains for the 2006-07 campaign," head coach Chad Skorupka said. "They will assist Jesse [Medvene-Collins] and I with helping the whole team reach its goal of the Sweet 16 next May at the University of Georgia."
Hirsch, a native of Atlanta Ga., returns for her junior year and will most likely play in the top singles position for the Demon Deacons. Through the first two tournaments this fall, Hirsch has compiled a 6-1 overall record, including a perfect 4-0 mark in the flight A of the Deacon Classic this past weekend.
Simpson suffered an injury at the St. Mary's Classic and was unable to compete at the Deacon Classic. Last season she played the majority of the year in the sixth singles position and closed the year with a 14-16 overall record. In doubles, she earned a team-best 25-10 overall record, playing with three different partners.
The Demon Deacons have played in two of their five tournaments so far this fall season. Wake Forest will next travel to the ITA/All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. The tournament, consisting of a prequalifier, a qualifier and a main draw, will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8.
