Final Stats

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team got all it wanted from Appalachian State in a 2-1 win at Spry Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wells Thompson broke a 1-1 tie in the 62nd minute for his third game-winning goal of the season. Thompson was at the receiving end of a one-touch pass from Michael Lahoud. The pass from the corner was from Zack Schilawski.

The Deacons (8-2) got on the board first in the 19th minute. Ryan Solle's corner kick was apparently bound for the net and deflected off Mountaineer goalkeeper Greg Walters and into the side netting. The goal was Solle's third of the season and gave the Deacs a 1-0 lead.

Ninety seconds later, Solle nearly notched a second goal, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Mountaineer defender.

Appalachian (5-4) continued to fight in the final 45 minutes. The Mountaineers narrowly outshot the Deacons 8-7 in the second half and were rewarded in the 57th minute with the equalizer. On a free kick from 30 yards out, Juan Obregon dumped a service in the box. No one on the Deacon defense made a play on the ball and much to the surprise of goalkeeper Brian Edwards, it bounced into the net.

Wake Forest would re-gain the lead less than five minutes later on Thompson's goal.

The Deacons could have stretched the lead in the 74th minute, but Austin da Luz's blast was saved off the post for a corner kick.

Wake Forest entertains Coastal Carolina at Spry Stadium on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
