Wake Forest Women Sprint To Third In Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - The 28th-ranked Wake Forest women's cross country team finished third out of 11 of the nation's strongest squads and Deacon senior Michelle Sikes finished second here Friday at the inaugural Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon. The Deacon men's team finished 13th with 356 points.

The Oregon men and Arkansas women's cross country squads cruised to first-place finishes.

The Deacon women's team finished with 117 points, trailing only 8th-ranked Arkansas (35 points) and 6th-ranked BYU (55). Arkansas took five of the top 10 places overall. Tenth-ranked Washington finished fourth, followed by No. 5 Duke, No. 30 Butler, No. 26 Indiana, UCLA, Portland, No. 28 Oregon and Utah State.

Sikes and BYU's Kassi Anderson battled the entire 6,000-meter race before Anderson finally pulled away for the win. Sikes finished the race in a solid 20:10.91. Early race leader and Duke senior Emily McCabe followed in third place (20:31.68).

Wake's Caitlin Chrisman finished 17th overall (21:05.41). Other Deacon runners included Erin Franklin (20th, 21:13.59), Allie Kieffer (33rd, 21:41.31), Nicole Shappert (45th, 22:07.25), Merry Placer (65th, 22:40.77) and Mary Alice Howard (69th, 23:08.90).

The No. 17 ranked Oregon men edged No. 8 Portland for first place in the 7,700-meter race, followed by No. 10 BYU and No. 20 Alabama. Cal Poly finished fifth, followed by UCLA, Washington, No. 25 Butler, No. 6 Texas, Duke, Utah State, American and Wake Forest.

The Deacon men were led by sophomore Jeremy Fisico, who finished 57th in a time of 24:30.56. Wake's John Compton finished 69th (24:55.38). Other Deacon runners included freshman Marcus Dillon (70th, 24:57.92), Jared Hill (79th, 25:18.61), Chris Catton (81st, 25:20.31), Brad Wharton (82nd, 25:24.07) and Joel Conn (90th, 27:11.95).

BYU's two-time All-American Josh Rohatinsky won the 7,770-meter race (22:58.37), and escaped in the final mile from Oregon redshirt sophomore Galen Rupp, who followed in second place (23:09.03). Portland's John Moore (third, 23:19.09) and Duck redshirt sophomore Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (fourth, 23:28.18) rounded out the top four.

Oregon's first home cross country event since 1998 showcased impressive race fields, including 24 collegiate teams from seven of the nation's nine regions and 10 top conferences.

Wake Forest's next event is Oct. 14 in Terre Haute (Ind.) at the Pre-NCAA Invitational.
