Bingham Breaks School Record in 300m

BLACKSBURG, Va. -
Competing in day one of the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, junior sprinter Michael Bingham shattered the school record in the 300m with a time of 33.43. The mark was also a facility record, breaking the previous Virginia Tech field house time of 34.11. The Burlington, N.C., native won the event in the process, besting the next closest competitor by almost a half second. Also competing in the 300m, freshman Tyler Dodds ran a time of 34.81.
Several other Deacons turned in solid performances on the first day of the meet as well. Junior Ashley Spooner came a hundredth of a second away from tying a 14-year-old school record in the 55m, running a 7.36 in the event. The time was also a personal record for the Oviedo, Fla., native.
Competing in her first collegiate meet, freshman Caroline Vaughn ran a time of 8.38 in the 55m hurdles.
Sophomore Brent LaRue ran consecutive times of 7.65 in the preliminary heat of the 55m hurdles and then again in the semifinals of the event. He finished as the final qualifier and will compete in the finals of the event on Saturday.
Junior Michelle Duffey had a big PR in the 500m dash, running a time of 1:15.61 to finish seventh in the event. The time broke her previous best mark by over three seconds.
Also competing in the 500m, junior Aaron Russell finished in a time of 1:05.95 to set a new PR for himself as well.
Junior Melissa Council finished the 300m race in 40.01, good for 13th overall in the event.
Junior Chris Catton ran a solid race in the 1000m, finishing third overall in a time of 2:29.22.
The Deacons will wrap up the second and final day of action from the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday beginning at noon.
