Deacon Boulevard, the street adjoining the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum, will be renamed Chris Paul Way in a special ceremony at Friday night's NBA exhibition game between Paul's New Orleans Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats in The Joel. Game time is set for 7:30.
Paul, the former All-America guard for Wake Forest, is entering his third season in the NBA where he was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2005-06. A native of Lewisville, he is a 2003 graduate of West Forsyth High School.
Paul's charitable contributions to Winston-Salem and Forsyth County are numerous. He has worked at refurbishing basketball courts, working with Habitat for Humanity and establishing a scholarship for Wake Forest University.
Chris Paul and the CP3 Foundation established the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund, in memory of Chris Paul's grandfather. The fund's annual distribution will be awarded both to a member of the men's varsity basketball team and to a need-based undergraduate student from Forsyth County attending Wake Forest University.
Paul will be presented with a proclamation and a replica street sign by Wake Forest University athletics director Ron Wellman. A proclamation honoring Paul will be given on behalf of Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines.
