WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The No. 2 Wake Forest men's soccer team snapped their 2-match winless streak with a bang on Tuesday night, shutting out Appalachian State 5-0 at Spry Stadium.

Senior defender Pat Phelan netted the first goal of his career in the second minute, converting a penalty kick that became the Deacon game-winner. Phelan followed up in the sixth minute with a second goal, taking a cross from Austin da Luz.

By the end of the night, da Luz posted three assists, the most for one Deacon in a game since Wake played Central Florida in August of 2006, where then-senior Steve Curfman also registered three.

Cody Arnoux added a goal in the 19th minute, marking the sophomore's sixth of the season. Zack Schilawski scored in the 67th minute, while an ASU defender accidentally touched the ball in for a Mountaineer own goal in the 83rd minute.

The last time the Demon Deacons posted a 5-goal margin of victory was at the start of the 2006 season when WFU defeated UCF 5-0 at the Wake Forest University tournament.

The Deacons now stand at 8-0-2 overall while Appalachian State is 6-4-1 for the season.

On Saturday, October 13 the Deacons will get back in ACC action as they host NC State at 7 pm.
