HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison's Jennifer Brown scored 16 points and Tamera Young added 14 t lead the Dukes to a 64-53 win over Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU improved to 4-0 on the season after going 27-6 a year. The loss was the first for the Demon Deacons who fell to 2-1 on the year.
Corinne Groves led Wake Forest with a season-high 22 points.
The game was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout the game. The lead changed hands early in the contest with Wake taking a 4-0 lead and JMU surging back to a 7-4 advantage. The Deacs enjoyed their last lead of the half at 8-7 after consecutive jump shots by Groves. JMU went ahead 9-8 on a layup by Jennifer Brown and built a six-point lead at 14-8. Wake closed the margin to one at 16-15 on a 3-pointer by Alex Tchangoue. JMU's lead at the break was four at 26-22.
A three-point field goal by JMU's Jasmin Lawrence gave the Dukes a 29-22 lead. A pair of jumpers by Courteney Morris and a field goal by Christen Brown drew the Deacs within one at 29-28. Brown's 3-pointer with 15:44 to play knotted the game at 31. JMU ran off six straight points for a 37-31 lead before a pair of Groves field goals narrowed the gap to two at 37-35. After Tamera Young's bucket gave JMU a 39-35 lead, the Deacs answered with a three-pointer by Tiffany Roulhac and another Groves field goal to take a 40-39 lead with 9:31 to play.
That would prove to be Wake Forest's final lead of the game. James Madison responded with a three-pointer by Dawn Evans, a jumper by Young and a fastbreak layup from Brown to go on top 46-40 with 7:49 remaining.
Wake closed to within four points with 4:45 to play following an inside basket by Groves that made the score 50-46. Consecutive layups by JMU's Nina Uqdah and Brown pushed the lead back to eight and Wake Forest would not draw that close again for the remainder of the contest.
"Statistically, this is the best offensive rebounding team I have ever seen," said WFU head coach Mike Petersen of James Madison. "They're averaging 30 offensive rebounds per game and I guess I should be happy that they only had 17 against us. They have good athletes and they go to the glass hard.
"We did a decent job on them in the first half but they shot the ball better than we did tonight. We didn't get enough good shots."
Wake Forest will depart on Tuesday for the Virgin Islands where they will participate in the Paradise Jam Tournament. The Deacs open play with Indiana on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.
