Wake Relay Team Takes First at Clemson Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Wake Forest track/field team concluded weekend competition at the Clemson Opener with five top-five finishes, including a first place mark in the women's 4x400m relay.
Melissa Council, Michelle Duffy, Nicole Castronouva and Alex Gove posted a collective 3:50.70 to finish first of 32 competitors in the women's 4x400m relay. The mark was just shy of last year's indoor season high 3:49.57 set at the Clemson Invitational on January 20.
Council also shined in the 400m dash, where she took a fourth place finish with a time of 57.21. Caroline Vaughn and Council's relay teammate Gove also placed in the 400m sprint, with Gove taking a 10th place finish with a mark of 58.22 and Vaughn taking 22nd place with 1:00.49.
Molly Fresher was the first ACC finisher in the 800m dash, whose mark of 2:23.04 was the fifth best time of the final 32 competitors. Wake's Hannah McArdle placed 14th in the event with a mark of 2:28.84.
Nicole Schappert was the runner-up competitor in the 3000m run with a time of 9:52.75.
On the men's side, Phillip Warsaw finished fifth in the 800m run, posting 1:58.95, while Alle Lunkenheimer finished in the 400m dash with a 50.85 mark and Jonathan Reid ran 22.73 in the 200m dash for a 16th place finish.
The Demon Deacons will return to competition following the winter break at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. on January 11 and 12.
