Wake Forest Head Coach Dino Gaudio
On the win against Virginia Tech
"That was a real character win for a young basketball team. It says a lot about the kids in that locker room. They just kept playing, just willed it out. That was a great, great win for us. We beat a very good, very well-coached basketball team. Seth [Greenberg] does a tremendous job with those guys. We're very fortunate to get the win. I thought down the stretch we got some big stops. I think a big guy on defense for us down the stretch was Chas McFarland. [He had] deflections, blocks, big rebounds. He was a big key for us at the end of the game on the defensive side of the ball. We held them to 43 percent which is a little bit skewed because we forced them into 22 turnovers. Our salvation was the 11 turnovers we had. We kept getting shots instead of giving them the basketball. I'm really happy with the win."
On Gary Clark's performance in the final minutes
"We were trying to trade offense for defense. Cameron [Stanley] is a very good defensive player. When they posted us on the out-of-bounds play, we had Jeff [Teague] on the kid, so we put Cam in for defense. Gary is a very good 3-point shooter. I'm happy for him, albeit he banked it in. But he's just worked and worked and worked and when the opportunity presented itself, he hit a big shot for us."
On Jamie Skeen's injury
"I know nothing of that right now. He had his shoe off in the locker room; had ice on it. If there's any positive about it, we have a little bit of time off where he can heal now. We'll keep our fingers crossed. Wow, we were dropping like flies out there. But I don't know the status of that."
Virginia Tech Head Coach Seth Greenberg
On the loss against Wake Forest
"It was a tough game. I'm really proud of our guys. We got-off to a horrendous start and found a way to fight and claw and get back into the basketball game despite 14 turnovers in the first half. That was a point of emphasis for us, being strong with the ball, and we had some guys that just weren't very strong with the ball. They did a nice job of tracing the ball and knocking the ball away. Once we settled into the game, I thought we did some very positive things. It was a tough match-up game. We had to go small because we really didn't have a match-up for [James] Johnson. We put ourselves in a position to win but we made some bad decisions."
On if the offense or defense was responsible for losing the eight-point lead late in the game
"I don't know if you can defend a banker. I don't know if you can defend a drag-screen where a guy has a guy running in front of him; you can't even see Ish Smith when he's running behind [Chas] McFarland. I don't know if that's a moving screen or not. We made a bad decision offensively, plain and simple. We didn't use the clock. We didn't understand time and score. We should understand time and score; we just didn't"
On whether he thought about putting Ishmael Smith on the free throw line at the end
"No. Not at all. He made a couple of free throws earlier in the game and he's a winning player. He made the big three and then he made the game-winner. I give him credit."
