Deacons Suffer First Loss of the Season

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as 13th-ranked VCU defeated the Deacons 4-3 on Friday evening at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
The Deacons (5-1) dropped the doubles point for the third straight match, but this time was unable to rally from the early deficit. Wake Forest and VCU split the six singles matches.
The all-important doubles point was decided at the number one position where VCU won 9-8, 7-3 in the tiebreaker. The Deacons captured a victory at number two doubles where Charles Sartor and Cory Parr won 8-6.
In singles, the Deacons got victories from its three upperclassmen -- seniors Todd Paul and Andrew Hamar and junior Mariusz Adamski. But the team's three underclassmen -- Parr and freshmen Steven Forman and Jason Morgenstern -- suffered defeats. For Parr and Forman, it was their first loss of the spring season.
The Rams have won five of the last six head-to-head matchups and lead the series 14-5.
Wake Forest returns to action Sunday against two more nationally-ranked opponents. The Deacons face 31st-ranked Minnesota at noon followed by 45th-ranked East Tennessee State at 5:00 p.m.
