Wake Forest junior golfer Webb Simpson, coming off his first collegiate victory and putting together a remarkable season, was named to the USA Palmer Cup team Thursday, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced.
The Palmer Cup, presented by Monster, is an annual Ryder-Cup style competition between college golfers from the United States and Europe. The Americans, who will be coached by Oklahoma State's Mike McGraw, will player their counterparts June 7-8 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
Simpson, who won the U.S. Collegiate Championship Wednesday in Georgia, will participate in two different international competitions in June. After the Palmer Cup, Simpson will join three other USA college golfers at the Copa de las Americas Championship June 20-23.
A Raleigh (N.C.) native, Simpson is the second Demon Deacon to play in the Palmer Cup. Former Wake Forest standout played on the team in 2002 and 2003.
Simpson will be joined on the USA's Palmer Cup team by Brian Harman and Chris Kirk of Georgia, Florida's Billy Horschel, Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina, Vanderbilt's Luke List, Jamie Lovemark of Southern California and Oklahoma State's Jonathan Moore.
The USA leads the all-time series with Europe, 5-4-1.
"I'm really excited about the players we have competing in this year's Palmer Cup," said McGraw. "We have a great group of kids who are very talented players. I like the team we've put together and we're looking forward to the matches."
Harman, Kirk and List competed in last summer's Palmer Cup with Kirk posting the only victory among the trio. Team USA has posted a 4-1 record on its home soil, including a 14-10 triumph in 2005 at Whistling Straits.
