CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The 19th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf regained second place and held on to become the runner-up at the 19th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship held at the Carmel Country Club (par-72, 6,293 yards). The Demon Deacons shot a 27-over for a three-day total of 44-over 908 (297-296-315).
Duke finished with a 9-over 873 to capture the conference title for 12th consecutive year. Florida State fell to third, behind the Deacs, after shooting a 33-over in the final round for a 49-over 913. North Carolina moved up to fourth place with a 53-over 917 total, while Virginia rounded out the top 56-over 920.
For the second straight weekend, Wake Forest faced tough weather conditions. The teams dodged the rain in the morning, but after a one-hour thunderstorm delay, the players fought gusty winds and rapidly falling temperatures.
Senior Mandy Goins and junior Laura Crawford both totaled a three-day score of a 10-over 226 to tie for eighth place, 14 strokes behind individual winner Amanda Blumenherst of Duke. Goins paced the Deacs on the final round after turning in a 4-over par, while Crawford shot an 8-over par.
Senior Maggie Simons shot an 8-over for a 12-over 228 to tie for 11th, while Jean Chua finished with a 14-over 230 for 14th place. Nannette Hill rounded out Wake's team of five with a 21-over par to tie for 24th place.
Wake Forest is off until the NCAA Regionals from May 10-12 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
