NEW LONDON, N.C. -- On a day when unranked Virginia Tech emerged as the feel-good story, tying Georgia Tech for the ACC Championship here Sunday, Wake Forest suffered its worst finish since 1999.

Virginia Tech shot a cumalitive 9-under par in the final round to emerge from the middle of the pack to tie Georgia Tech at the Old North State Golf Club. The Hokies, one of just five ACC teams not ranked in the top 30 nationally, were a longshot to capture one of the nation's strongest league's championship. Georgia Tech was crowned co-champion for the second straight year. Both teams finished the 54-hole event 10-under par and there was no playoff.

Wake Forest, ranked 20th nationally, finished in eighth place, 22 strokes off the pace after shooting a combined 3-over on Sunday. The Deacons played one man short on Sunday after sophomore Dustin Groves disqualified himself for a minor rules infranction. The eighth-place finish tied for the Deacons' lowest finish in the 54-year history of the tournament.

Florida State's Jonas Blixt shot a sizzling 7-under par 65 Sunday to earn ACC individual medalist honors. Blixt, 8-under for the tournament, finished one shot in front of Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale and two shots ahead of Clemson's Kyle Stanley and Virginia Tech's Ryan Sypniewski.

Wake Forest's Chris McCartin shot a final-round 5-under 67 to finish seventh overall. McCartin has finished in the top 10 two straight years at the ACC Championship and he has finished in the top 25 all three years of his career.

McCartin birdied four of the first six holes on Sunday. If not for a bogey on the 18th hole, McCartin would have finished in a tie for fifth place.

Senior Sean Moore, who won medalist honors as a freshman in 2004, finished in 19th place. After a 73 on Sunday, Moore finished the tournament at 2-over par.

Junior Webb Simpson never got in a groove this week and finished the tournament 5-over par and tied for 33rd. Freshman Brendan Gielow, who was 1-under after the first round, shot his second straight 77 Sunday to finish 9-over and tied for 40th place.

Next up for Wake Forest will be one of three NCAA regional tournaments May 17-19. The Deacons won the NCAA East Regional in 2005 and 2006.
