GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a weekend of unseasonably wintry weather, the 16th-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team placed 13th in the 18-team field at the Bryan National Collegiate's Champions Course (par 72, 6,386 yards). The Demon Deacons shot a 311 for a three-day total of 932.
Wake kicked off the final round at 11 a.m. and moved as far up as ninth place, but found trouble on the back nine as the round came to a close. Purdue jumped ahead of Florida to reclaim the lead and held on to capture the team title after shooting 294 on the final day for an 887 three-day total, finishing seven shots ahead of second-place Florida.
North Carolina placed third with a 33-over 897, while Duke was right behind placing fourth with a 34-over 898. Tennessee jumped three spots to finish fifth after shooting a 2-under 286, marking the best round of any team in this year's tournament.
Purdue was paced by Maria Hernandez who led the Boilermakers throughout the three-day tournament and captured the individual honor after winning the third playoff hole over Florida's Sandra Gal.
Nanette Hill turned play around shooting an even score for the day to total an 11-over 227 to tie for 18th place. After a bogey on the 14th hole, the sophomore birdied three of her last four holes to move to 2-under at the turn. Mandy Goins shot an 8-over and finished with a 13-over 229 to tie for 24th place. Starting on the ninth hole, Goins remained even until she birdied the 11th to go 1-under par, but struggled to get back on track after bogies on the 16th-18th holes.
Laura Crawford finished with an 18-over 234 to tie for 47th, while Jean Chua carded a 26-over 242 to tie for 73rd. Dolores White rounded out Wake's team of five as she shot a 34-over 250 and tied for 88th.
Playing as an individual, Maggie Simons turned in a 14-over 230 to tie for 32nd.
Wake Forest is back in action next week when it competes at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships from April 13-15 at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte.
