The second in a series of blogs written by sophomore Dustin Groves, a key member of the Demon Deacon golf team. Wake Forest is participating Thursday through Saturday at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Williamsburg, Va. Groves gives a behind-the-scenes look at traveling with the Deacons.
Greetings from Tempe, Arizona.
The team was up early again Wednesday morning (6 a.m.) for our first look at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. Before we hit the links we stopped at Albert Einstein's bagels (who I'll get back to later) for breakfast. For all the reality TV fanatics you'll be interested to hear we ran into Neamiah and Johanna from MTV's, The Real World. Both were much shorter than they appear on TV, and if you are wondering, all the drama in the show is real.
Back to the golf... We had a good practice round, everyone played very well and seemed to be in complete control of their game. It is much easier to focus completely on golf when you do not have to worry about tests, projects, papers etc. The course is generally right in front of you and only has a handful of hard holes. The scores will be low this week as long as the wind stays down and greens stay receptive. Luckily, we played early because it gets very hot during the afternoon. Today was cooler than yesterday with a high of 99 instead of 100.
After the round we had lunch in the clubhouse and everyone dished out movie lines to see if anyone could guess the movie. The best line was, "You work for the bank, and the bank works for me, so ipso-facto I'm your boss" (Answer at the bottom).
After lunch we hit a few and came back to the hotel to relax before we went back to the clubhouse for dinner and a players/coaches meeting. Along with the rest of the team, I probably could not tell you one word said during the meeting... it was boring to say the least. We quickly got out of there and headed for the nearest Dairy Queen, where everyone had their favorite ice cream treats. When we were getting into the van to leave, Webb spotted someone on a cell phone who was "dressed up" like Albert Einstein. Webb gave him a hard time about his outfit, wig, etc, which provided a good laugh for the rest of the team.
When we got back to the hotel we had a quick team meeting to talk about tee times, pin placements and a few other small things. Everyone seems to be excited to play and show people how good we really are.
