Wake Forest Creeps Up To 11th At NCAA Championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Wake Forest improved by six strokes and moved up three spots to 11th place in the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at the LPGA International Legends Course here Wednesday.
The 17th-ranked Demon Deacons shot a solid 12-over par 300 on Wednesday as four players all scored between 74 and 76 on the par 72, 6,351-yard course.
No. 1-ranked Duke took a seven stroke lead in the race for the national championship with their 1-under 287 on Wednesday the only under-par score by any team in the tournament. UCLA is in second place, seven strokes back at 18-over, and Purdue is in third, 10 strokes behind Duke at 21-over.
Wake Forest is 19 strokes off the pace with a 36-hole total of 30-over 606. The Deacons, who shot 18-over 306 in Tuesday's first round, turned in a solid score on Wednesday.
Deacon sophomore Jean Chua shot a 2-over 74 Wednesday, putting her in 23rd place for the tournament at 6-over par. Senior Mandy Goins and junior Laura Crawford both had 3-over 75s in the second round. Sophomore Nannette Hill had a 76 and senior Maggie Simons an 80.
Chua shot an even par 36 on the back nine Wednesday. Hill earned a par on 10 of the last 11 holes, but she was plagued by a triple bogey on the 13th hole.
Purdue's Christel Boeljon, who is 3-under through 36 holes, leads the individual race by one stroke over Arkansas' Stacy Lewis. Three players are tied for third at 1-under.
