DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Mandy Goins and sophomore Nannette Hill earned postseason accolades by the National Golf Coaches Association, announced Friday after the conclusion of the NCAA Championships.
Goins, was named honorable mention All-America after leading the Demon Deacons for the majority of the season, while remaining in the Top 30 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. The Frankfort, Ky. native earned the honor for the second straight year. Goins enjoyed a career best NCAA tournament score and showed solid tournament performance, her last as a Demon Deacon. She shot a 3-over 75 on the final day and tied for 21st with a 21-over 300, which is the best showing at an NCAA tournament for the recent graduate.
"Mandy finished her career on a high note, with her best finish in the NCAA's and earning All American honors for the second year," said head coach Dianne Dailey.
Hill was named to the All-Region (East) team, earning postseason accolades for the first time and is among elite company joining Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Anna Grzebien, UCLA's Sydnee Michaels and Tiffany Joh, Louisville's Adrienne White and Cindy LaCrosse, Florida State's Caroline Westrup, Auburn's Nicole Hage, East Carolina's Lene Krog and Furman's Kathleen Ekey.
Hill led the Deacs to a record-breaking performance at the NCAA East Regional to help Wake Forest to a third-place finish behind Duke and UCLA. Hill shot an 18-hole program record 66 on the opening day and her 6-under par also set a career low-round score, surpassing her previous career low of 69. She also broke the individual 18-hole score record of 67, which was first set in 1985. At the NCAA Championships, Hill finished with a 14-over 302 to tie for 30th place after shooting a 5-over 77 for the final round.
"We are pleased with our 12th place finish at the NCAA's, although our goal was to be in the top 10," said Dailey upon completion of Wake Forest's second straight Championship appearance. "We missed by a few shots but all the students gave their best effort. We learned a lot throughout the year and put it to work in the postseason, finishing 2nd at the ACC's, 3rd at Regionals and 12th at NCAA's, which was much better than anyone predicted. Our seniors, Mandy Goins and Maggie Simmons, gave us a lot of leadership on and off the course and we will miss them next year."
