WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest is on the bubble no longer. The Demon Deacons were given an at-large berth into the 64-team field of the 2007 NCAA Baseball Tournament on Monday afternoon.
Wake Forest will be the third seed in the Round Rock, Texas, Regional. The Deacons will face second-seeded UC Irvine (40-15-1) in the opening round of the tournament. Regional host and top-seeded Texas (44-15) will take on fourth-seeded Brown (27-19) in the other opening-round matchup.
Game times and dates have yet to be determined.
The Deacons were on the bubble for a spot in the field, but their strong showing at last week's ACC Tournament put the Deacs over the top. The bid is Wake's 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and its first since 2002.
Wake Forest is 36-21 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. The Deacs have advanced to the College World Series twice, doing so in 1949 and 1955. Wake's 1955 national championship still stands as the Atlantic Coast Conference's last CWS title.
The Deacons have faced Texas twice in NCAA Tournament play, falling to the Longhorns in both 1949 meetings. Wake was the national runner-up to Texas that season.
Wake Forest has never faced UC Irvine on the diamond. The Deacs hold a perfect 5-0 record against Brown with the last meeting coming in 1991.
Texas is one of eight national seeds, coming in at No. 4. The Longhorns were ranked No. 6 in the latest Baseball America Top 25 Poll. UC Irvine is ranked No. 10 in the poll.
