WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's golf team, ranked No. 18 in the latest Golfweek rankings, is set to compete in its 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament Regional on Thursday when it opens play at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La. for the East Regional.
The tournament format calls for 18 holes to be played May 10-12 at Louisiana State's par-72, 6,424-yard course.
Wake Forest's lineup will include the same five-player team that led the Demon Deacons to a second-place finish at the conference championships. Seniors Mandy Goins and Maggie Simons, junior Laura Crawford and sophomores Nannette Hill and Jean Chua will attempt to earn Wake a spot at the NCAA Championships, this year held at the LPGA International Golf course in Daytona, Fla, for the second straight year.
Three regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the championship field. A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
Wake Forest earned the eighth seed and is one of nine teams ranked in the top 25. The two-time defending national champion Duke is the top seed in the East. UCLA earned the second seed and is ranked ninth, while Auburn took the third seed and is ranked sixth. Purdue (12th) and Texas A&M (14th) round out the East Regional's top five seeds.
Four other ACC teams will compete in the regional along with Duke and Wake Forest including sixth-seeded North Carolina, 10th-seeded Virginia, 11th-seeded Florida State, and 15th-seeded North Carolina State.
The three individual selections for the East Regional were: Araceli Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina, Lene Krog of East Carolina and Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State.
Led by head coach Dianne Dailey, Wake Forest enters regional play seeking its 10th NCAA Championship appearance since 1993.
After taking seventh place in the East Regional last year, the Deacs advanced to the NCAA Championships where they placed 15th at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio with Nannette Hill and Maggie Simons leading the squad.
Wake Forest is scheduled to tee off at 8:10 a.m. on Thursday. All three rounds can be followed live on the internet at golfstat.com.
