WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - "When you get the right people together you can make great things happen," said Wake Forest women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
Skorupka is referring to the first-ever "Camp Airborne Deacs". Along with women's assistant coach Jesse Medvene-Collins, men's tennis assistant coach Andrew Simpson, Indoor Tennis Center Director Tamer Hegazy and All-ACC women's tennis standout Alexandra Hirsch, the Demon Deacon tennis program will host girls and boys, ages 12-15, in a four day, three night tennis camp.
Through donations, the Wake Forest tennis programs are able to host children whose parents are stationed at Ft. Bragg and Seymour Johnson Air Force base or serving in the military overseas. The campers will be able to learn the fundamentals of tennis, while participating in other on- and off-campus activities such as flag football, "putt-putt", and taking in a movie. They will be housed in campus dormitories along with chaperones and will be provided meals in Reynolda Hall. "Originally, I got an idea for a camp like this when I was in my first year coaching at Yale in the fall of 2001," said Skorupka. "Tragically 9/11 happened right when I got there and the following summer I wanted to put a camp together for the kids from the New York City area. With many military bases in our backyard here in North Carolina it's a no-brainer."
Campers will arrive Thursday evening and begin tennis lessons on Friday playing in the morning and afternoon at Leighton Tennis Stadium. If inclement weather should occur, tennis activities will be moved to the Indoor Tennis Center.
