Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No. 2 Wake Forest men's soccer team wrapped up pre-season play with a 2-1 win over Cincinnati in front of more than 2,500 fans Friday night at Spry Stadium.
The Deacs out-shot the Bearcats 15-5 while both Brian Edwards and Akira Fitzgerald recorded saves for WFU (1, 2 respectively).
Junior Jamie Franks shined during the contest, posting the Deacon's first goal of the night just seven minutes into the match, netting a cross from sophomore Zack Schilawski. Franks also provided the assist for Cody Arnoux's game winning goal just twenty minutes later.
"Jamie is really showing his maturity," Head Coach Jay Vidovich said. "He reads the game very well. Hopefully we'll use that as a platform to build on as we get ready to start the season."
Four Deacon freshmen recorded quality minutes in Friday's match, including firecracker Jeff Leach who registered one shot on goal off the bench. Classmate Ike Opara entered play during the second half and remained in the Deacon backline until the game's conclusion, helping the defense hold the Bearcats to four shots in the half. Russ Coleman subbed in for junior Lyle Adams in the midfield in the last minutes of the first half.
After recording one goal and one assist in the previous scrimmage against Furman, freshman Corben Bone earned a start during Friday's match.
"This is the best way from them to learn," Franks said. "When I was a freshman I looked to the older guys for support and leadership and hopefully we helped them out tonight."
The Deacons will have five more practices before regular season play begins August 31 at the Nike Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C.
