Kulikova Takes Flight 1 Title at Deacon Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - It took three days and nearly 140 matches, but at the end of the 2007 Deacon Classic, four Wake Forest women's tennis team members took flight titles, including sophomore Sasha Kulikova who was the overall winner in the Flight 1 draw.
Kulikova defeated opponents from Georgia State, Richmond and Illinois on her way to top flight win.
"This was my first time playing at the top of our lineup," Kulikova said. "I was nervous. I had to work really hard but it was a great opportunity."
Junior Sierra Poske battled Indiana's Katya Zapadalova in the finals of Flight 2. Poske took an early lead in the first set, posting a 6-3 win, but Zapadalova tied the contest with a 6-3 win in the second set. Poske took the title with a final 6-2 win in the final set.
Wake freshmen Emliee Malvehy and Katarina Reveche took the 3 and 4 Flight wins, respectively. After receiving a bye in the first round, top-seeded Malvehy defeated opponents from Illinois and Richmond in straight sets to take the draw title. Reveche held Georgia State's Jackie Payne two just two games in her draw opener and followed with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Indiana's Myriam Sopel to move into the finals. The California native defeated Momei Qu of Illinois 6-2, 6-2 to take the Flight 4 overall win.
After advancing through two rounds in Flight 5, senior Jenna Loeb fell 6-3, 6-0 in the finals to Indiana's Charlotte Martin.
All WFU teams advanced in the first round of the doubles flights but were unable to catch a Saturday win to continue in the main draw. Katarina Reveche and Jenna Loeb dropped an intense 9-8(5) tiebreaker to Indiana's Erin Clark and Maria Guerreiro in the second round of Flight 2 to move into the consolation draw. Clark/Guerriero went on to take the flight win with a 8-4 victory over Dartmouth's Jesse Adler and Maggie Suydam.
Next up for the Deacons will be the ITA All-Americans, set to begin pre-qualifying play at the end of September.
