ATLANTA, Ga. - Despite multiple leads in the second half, the Wake Forest women's basketball team was unable to hold on for its first ACC win against Georgia Tech on Thursday evening at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta. The 57-47 loss set the Demon Deacons at 12-5, 0-3 while the Yellow Jackets improved to 14-2, 1-1 for the year.

Wake Forest's Corinne Groves scored a game-high 21 points, hitting 10 of 15 field goals, while Georgia Tech's Janie Mitchell followed with 20. WFU Georgia native Christen Brown and Groves led the game with nine rebounds a piece.

The Deacons topped the Jackets inside the arc, shooting 37.5 percent to Tech's 36 percent, but Tech held a dramatic advantage with 3's, shooting 28.6 percent (4-14) while Wake came up short with an 0-15 mark.

After going into halftime trailing by just three points, the Deacons took the lead twice in the second half. With 10:58 remaining, Mitchell hit a layup to put the Yellow Jackets up 44-43 and the Jackets held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Deacons took the lead in the first half at the 15:23 mark when Christen Brown hit one of two charity stripe shots. Wake Forest took the 7-6 advantage and stretched it to a five point lead with a 4-0 run, bringing the small crowd of Demon Deacon fans to their feet.

GT's Chioma Nnamaka knotted the game at 13-13 with 11:20 in the half, nailing an unchallenged 3-point basket. The Yellow Jackets held tight to the advantage for the remainder of the half, leading by as much as nine points. Corinne Groves, who shot 87 percent in the opening period, cut the Tech lead to 32-29 at halftime with a last second layup.

Groves was the sharp shooter who put the Deacons ahead for the first time in the second half, netting a layup with 16 minutes remaining to put Wake Forest up 38-37.

Yellow Jacket Jill Ingram tied the contest for the fourth time at 39-39 with 15:15 to play and Alex Montgomery followed with a layup to give Georgia Tech the advantage. Wake Forest's Alex Tchangoue hit back-to-back jumpers to give Wake Forest its final lead of the game with just under ten minutes to play.

On the next Yellow Jacket possession, Mitchell put Tech ahead by one point (44-43) with a layup and followed with a second basket to help the Yellow Jackets extend the lead. Tech finished the game with an 11-2 run to take their first ACC win.

The Demon Deacons will return to the Winston-Salem hardwood on Monday to host Clemson at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports.
