CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A late Wake Forest run was just a little too late in Boston, as the Wake Forest women's basketball team fell 66-58 to the BC Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
The loss sets Wake Forest at 12-8 and 0-6 in the ACC, while Boston College improved to 15-5 and 3-2 in conference action.
With 20 seconds in regulation, a 3-point basket from Camille Collier put the Demon Deacons within four points of tying the contest where earlier, they trailed by 19 points with 12 minutes to play. BC then netted six consecutive free throws to get the final lead.
Collier was the leading scorer at the contest, putting up 21 points through 40 minutes. The mark tops her career record of 20, set just a few days earlier against Clemson.
Carolyn Swords led the Eagles with 15 points, while WFU's Mekia Valentine and BC's Ayla Brown each had 11 rebounds.
The Demon Deacons had their best free throw campaign of the season, shooting 91 percent from the charity stripe (10-11). Brittany Waters, Kem Wilson, Courteney Morris and Alex Tchangoue were a perfect 2-2 from the line, while Collier shot 2-for-3.
The sharp WFU free throw shooting didn't translate into regular play, as the Deacs shot just 22 percent in the first half, while the Eagles were shooting 41 percent from the floor. The Deacons out-shot BC in the second half, 54 percent to 47 percent, but it wasn't enough to get the final edge.
After a pair of free throws in the first minutes from Courteney Morris, the Eagles held the Deacons scoreless for nearly ten full minutes. Head Coach Mike Petersen called a timeout with 10:25 to play to recharge the Deacs, who were trailing 16-2.
In the next WFU possession, Camille Collier finally broke through with a jumper to set the score 16-4. The basket marked the beginning of a 17-10 run in the Deacon favor and by halftime Wake Forest was down just eight points (27-19).
After staying scoreless through the first half, BC's Mikel Picco lit up boards, going for 4-for-6 beyond the arc and racking up 14 points total. Picco's hot hand helped the Eagles take a 19 point lead.
Mekia Valentine had her first double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds, totaling eight points and five rebounds in the second half alone to help the Deacons chip away at the deficit.
The Demon Deacons will return to Winston-Salem to host their final non-conference game of the season on Thursday, January 25, against Savannah State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Joel Coliseum.
