Demon Deacons Shine in Black & Gold Game

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest officially kicked off the 2008-09 hoops season with its annual Black & Gold Game held Saturday morning in front of a standing-room only crowd at Reynolds Gymnasium.
The Demon Deacons played three six-minute quarters, mixing the teams up after the first two periods of the instrasquad scrimmage.
Three players scored in double figures on the day, led by freshman Al-Farouq Aminu's 14. Aminu went 5-for-9 from the floor and also pulled down six rebounds.
Sophomore James Johnson and freshman Tony Woods joined Aminu in double digits. Johnson finished with 11 points in the three quarters, adding three rebounds and two steals. Woods just missed a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Sophomore Jeff Teague filled up the stat sheet with seven points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds.
Senior Bobby Hoekstra was active on the boards with eight rebounds, while junior David Weaver pulled down four caroms.
Sophomore Gary Clark had five points and two rebounds, while freshman Ty Walker had two points, two boards and two blocks.
Senior Harvey Hale and junior L.D. Williams each finished with two points and two boards. Senior Mike Lepore turned in three rebounds on the day.
Behind Aminu and Woods, the Gold team won the first half, 29-15. Aminu poured in nine points and added four rebounds, while Woods finished the two quarters with eight points and five boards.
Teague scored seven points and had three steals in the half, and Clark chipped in five points. Hoekstra dominated the boards with six rebounds.
Johnson led the Black squad in the first half with nine points. Weaver pulled down four rebounds for the Black.
The Deacons mixed up the rosters after the first two quarters, but it was Aminu and Woods who led their squad to victory again. This time donning a different color jersey, Aminu and Woods led the Black team to a 9-4 win in the third quarter.
Aminu turned in five points, while Woods pulled down three rebounds for the Black.
Johnson and Hoekstra were the only two Gold players to score in the third quarter with two points apiece.
Juniors Chas McFarland and Ishmael Smith sat out the scrimmage due to injuries.
Wake Forest will play its only preseason exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 6, against Mount Olive. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Joel Coliseum.
