CLEMMONS, N.C. - Wake Forest hosted 443 runners and 62 cross country squads in today's 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at Tanglewood Park. The Demon Deacons finished 11th of 33 teams in the women's 6-kilometer race, and sophomore Greg Billington led the way for the Deacon men completing the 10-kilometer event with a time of 32:14 and a 52nd-overall finish.
With an estimated attendance of 1,876 lining the course, ACC Rookie of the Year Anna Nosenko finished first for Wake Forest and 21st overall with her time of 21:37.9.
Sophomore Marley Burns was the second Deacon scorer with a time of 21:39.6, finishing 23rd overall and fewer than two seconds behind teammate A. Nosenko. Both were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region Team.
Freshman Dina Nosenko and redshirt senior Merry Placer also finished in the top 50. D. Nosenko placed 38th, finishing the course in 21:59.4. Placer came in 48th at 22:13.4.
Recording 142nd and 154th places overall, sophomore Caitlin Crawford and freshman Laura Rapp rounded out the Deacon competitors in the women's event. Crawford recorded a 23:39.0, while Rapp finished in 23:53.5.
All-ACC redshirt junior Allie Kieffer was unable to finish the race due to an injury.
"Unfortunately for the women, we lost our No. 1 runner all year. We've been really consistent all season so it's very sad that we're not going to the NCAA Championships. But overall, I was pleased with the effort of our main group. We've just got some more work to do."
The Virginia women won the meet with 105 points. Kentucky came in second with 126 points. The Deacons totaled 270 points to finish 11th. Tasmin Fanning of Virginia Tech finished the 6K as the individual champion with a time of 20:07.8.
The men's squad ran three participants in the 10-kilometer race. Billington was the top runner for the Deacons for the fifth time this year. He finished with a time of 32:14.0 and placed 52nd.
"On the men's side, they ran well and did a great job out there for what we had. Greg Billington composed himself and learned a lot and really had a nice race. Paul Loeser also did well for a freshman. We're excited to see what the future has to hold for these guys."
Loeser recorded a 35:06.4, and senior Zach Hines finished with a 36:39.1. They placed 165th and 196th.
Both Deacon squads are young, with only one redshirt senior - Merry Placer - on the roster this season.
William and Mary and Virginia were the top two teams in the men's competition. William and Mary edged out Virginia by one point, finishing with a total of 66. Liberty's Samuel Chelanga won the event. He finished with a 29:53.4, nearly 25 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor (30:17.8).
